Training with the AMUSF
Good training is imperative for a sound and productive business and in today’s economic climate, training can make the difference between survival and failure.
Having been concerned by the lack of good practical craft skills being offered, the AMUSF has, over the past few years, developed their our own range of Upholstery and Soft Furnishings qualifications.
We now have a suite of qualifications that have been devised by professionals within the industry and are assessed by industry experts.
Based on good practical traditional upholstery and soft furnishing skills, these qualifications may lead to employment within the industry or, with additional practice, may lead to you starting your own small business.
Good quality training is offered by our own AMUSF Approved Training Centres.

National Skills, Funding & Qualifications
If you are an employer looking to train your staff, there are still a few funded options open to you. The Skills Academy is the standards setting organisation for our industry. They work in collaboration with our industry groups to ensure that the skills and funding system delivers against the current and future needs of the industry. The membership is a combination of technical experts who work within the industry, training providers and stakeholders. The role of these groups is to develop and review new and existing standards and qualifications to meet the increasing demands of business and ever changing new markets. They therefore play an important role in ensuring the right training provision is in place to support investment in skills.
Standards and Qualifications we develop include:
- National Occupational Standards (NOS) – the building blocks of vocational qualifications that define the competencies an individual requires in order to do their job effectively and productively
- National Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) / Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) – nationally recognised qualifications.
- Apprenticeship Frameworks – work-based training programmes that allow individuals to learn and earn at the same time by combining on and off the job training. They represent one of the best ways to develop the skills your business needs.
